ABOARD USS KITTY HAWK (May 19, 2001) -- An F-14 Tomcat is being catapulted off the flight deck of the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) during daily routine flight operations.  Kitty Hawk is participating in the exercise Tandem Thrust 01, a combined United States and Australian military training exercise. This biannual exercise is being held in the vicinity of Shoal water Bay training area, Queensland, Australia. More than 27,000 Soldiers, Sailors, Airman and Marines are participating.  Canadian units are taking part as opposing forces. Tandem Thrust is a training exercise for crisis action planning and execution for contingency response operations. Kitty Hawk operates out of Yokosuka Naval Base, Japan and is the world's only forward-deployed aircraft carrier.
