Atlantic Ocean (April 23, 2005) -- Two flight deck personnel observe an
AV-8B Harrier assigned to the "Bulldogs" of Marine Attack Squadron Two
Two Three (VMA-223) take off from the flight deck aboard the amphibious
assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7). The AV-8B is a high performance,
single-engine, single-seat, Vertical/Short Take-off and Landing
(V/STOL) attack aircraft. The AV-8B Harrier II+ is capable of night and
adverse weather operations due to the addition of the AN/APG-65
multi-mode radar. The fusion of night and radar capabilities allows the
Harrier to be responsive to the Marine Air-Ground Task Force's needs
for expeditionary, night and adverse weather, offensive air support.
