Atlantic Ocean (April 23, 2005) -- Two flight deck personnel observe an AV-8B Harrier assigned to the "Bulldogs" of Marine Attack Squadron Two Two Three (VMA-223) take off from the flight deck aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7). The AV-8B is a high performance, single-engine, single-seat, Vertical/Short Take-off and Landing (V/STOL) attack aircraft. The AV-8B Harrier II+ is capable of night and adverse weather operations due to the addition of the AN/APG-65 multi-mode radar. The fusion of night and radar capabilities allows the Harrier to be responsive to the Marine Air-Ground Task Force's needs for expeditionary, night and adverse weather, offensive air support. Iwo Jima is currently at sea conducting training operations. U.S. Navy photo by Photographer's Mate 1st Class Robert J. Fluegel (RELEASED)
