At sea aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) Aug. 3, 2002 -- An AV8-B Harrier II, light-attack jet assigned to the "Tomcats" of Marine Attack Squadron Three One One (VMA-311) conducts training operations on the ship's flight deck. The AV-8B II is a second generation, vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) light-attack jet aircraft utilized by the Marine Corps. The primary mission of the AV8-B is to provide responsive close air support for ground forces. This single-piloted, advanced V/STOL aircraft can operate from short fields, forward sites, roads and surface ships providing minimum response time to targets.  Bonhomme Richard is conducting deck-landing qualifications in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Southern California.  U.S Navy photo by Photographer's Mate 3rd Class Staci M.
