A U.S. Air Force LC-130 Hercules ski-equipped cargo plane is visible from the cockpit of another Hercules as the aircraft prepares to take off from a remote National Science Foundation field camp on Shackleton Glacier, Antarctica on Jan. 22, 1996. The Shackleton Glacier Field Camp is one of the largest outlying research field camps the National Science Foundation operates during the Antarctic research summer between October and January.  The National Science Foundation, U.S. Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Army work together to support scientific research year round.  DoD photo by Petty Officer 2nd Class John K.
