Leyte Gulf (Feb. 20, 2006) -- U.S. Marines from 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (31MEU) board a CH-46E Sea Knight assigned to the "Flying Tigers" of Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 262 (HMM-262), on the flight deck aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2).  More than 200 Marines are being airlifted to the Municipality of Saint Bernard, Republic of the Philippines, to assist with humanitarian assistance and recovery efforts, following a Feb. 17 landslide which devastated the town of Guinsahugon located in the southern part of the island.  Essex along with the dock landing ship USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49) are part of the Forward Deployed Amphibious Ready Group, the Navy's only forward-deployed amphibious force, homeported in Sasebo, Japan.
