A Ch-47 Helicopter gets ready to sling load a HMMWV and field artillery's howitzer back to Salerno Forward Operating Base from the field at the end of the Operation Avalanche, Dec. 14, 2003.  During Avalanche Chinooks sling loaded nine vehicles, two water buffalos and 16,000 gallons of fuel and they also transported around 60,000 pounds of cargos to the field. Task Force 1-501st out of Fort Richardson, Alaska, has been based at Salerno Forward Operating Base (FOB Salerno), Afghanistan, since November 2003. Avalanche has been conducted by the 1-501st Parachute Infantry Regiment to destroy anti-coalition militia (ACM) on objectives in order to deny ACM sanctuary and set conditions for future operations.
