During Avalanche Chinooks sling loaded nine vehicles, two water
buffalos and 16,000 gallons of fuel and they also transported around
60,000 pounds of cargos to the field. Task Force 1-501st out of Fort
Richardson, Alaska, has been based at Salerno Forward Operating Base
(FOB Salerno), Afghanistan, since November 2003. Avalanche has been
conducted by the 1-501st Parachute Infantry Regiment to destroy
anti-coalition militia (ACM) on objectives in order to deny ACM
sanctuary and set conditions for future operations. (U.S. Army photo by
