Pacific Ocean (May 22, 2004) -- An F/A-18 Hornet assigned to the "Golden Dragons" of Strike Fighter Squadron One Nine Two (VFA-192), makes its final launch from the flight deck of USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) following the ship's annual spring cruise.  The F/A-18 is an all-weather attack aircraft that can also be used as a strike fighter. In its fighter mode, the F/A-18 is used primarily as an escort and for fleet air defense. In its attack mode, it is used for power projection, interdiction and close air support. Currently under way in the 7th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR), the conventional aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk demonstrates power projection and sea control as the world's only permanently forward-deployed aircraft carrier, operating from Yokosuka, Japan.
