Pacific Ocean (June 22, 2006) -- Aviation Machinist's Mate Airman Josh Ainsburg, from Huntington, Mass., attaches the outer flaps of an afterburner to the engine of an F/A-18 Super Hornet in aviation intermediate maintenance department's (AIMD) jet shop aboard USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63). The outer flaps on an afterburner act as heat deflectors and facilitate airflow through the jet engine. The Kitty Hawk Carrier Strike group is currently participating in Valiant Shield 2006. Valiant Shield focuses on integrated joint training among U.S. military forces, enabling real-world proficiency in sustaining joint forces and in detecting, locating, tracking and engaging units at sea, in the air, on land and cyberspace in response to a range of mission areas.
