South China Sea, aboard USS Harpers Ferry (June 22, 2003) -- Boatswain's Mate 3rd Class Robert M. Persi directs an SH-60B Seahawk from Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron (Light) (HSL) 51, during deck landing qualifications on board the dock landing ship USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49). The qualifications were being held in preparation for the weeklong Brunei phase of exercise Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) which began June 23. HSL 51 is forward deployed to Atsugi, Japan. Harpers Ferry, with the embarked U.S. Marine Corps CARAT Landing Force (LF CARAT), is forward deployed to Sasebo, Japan. LF CARAT is comprised of Marines from a variety of units forwarded deployed to Okinawa, Japan. CARAT is a regularly scheduled series of bilateral military training exercises between the U.S. and several Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries. U.S. Marine Corps photo by Cpl.
