At sea aboard USS Essex (LHD 2) Jan. 22, 2002 - Helicopter Combat Support Squadron Five (HC-5), Detachment Six, performs deck landing qualifications aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) in their new aircraft, the MH-60S Knighthawk. HC-5 is the first search and rescue (SAR) squadron to deploy the Knighthawk, which will soon replace the older HH-46 Sea Knight. HC-5 is forward deployed to Anderson Air Force Base, Guam. Detachment 6 is permanently assigned to Essex, forward deployed to Sasebo, Japan. HC-5, Det. 6 provides the Essex Amphibious Ready Group and embarked 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit with airborne search and rescue capability.
