At sea aboard USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) Nov. 14, 2002 -- A plane captain
assigned to the "Red Tails" of Sea Control Squadron Two One (VS-21)
prepares an S-3B Viking for the next launch on the ship's flight
schedule. VS-21 is conducting joint training exercises during
Keen Sword 2003. Keen Sword is a series of regularly scheduled
joint/bilateral field training exercises involving the Japanese
Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) and United States military.
The purpose of Keen Sword is to train and evaluate wartime functions
and bilateral cooperation procedures against the backdrop of a regional
contingency scenario that has direct and immediate consequences to the
