Luzon, Philippines (Sept. 18, 2003) -- USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49) cruises off the coast of the Philippines as Amphibious Assault Vehicles (AAV) wait to transport personnel and equipment back to the ship.  AAVs move from ship to shore, capable of 8 to 10 knots in the water and over 45 mph on land carrying either personnel or support equipment, in addition to having a 50-caliber machine gun and a grenade launcher for armament. Harpers Ferry is part of the USS Essex (LHD 2) Amphibious Readiness Group with the embarked 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit is participating in Blue/Green Workups.  Blue/Green Workups is a bi-annual joint training exercise designed to develop joint cooperation and meld the blue/green team into one cohesive fighting force, while operating with their Filippino counterparts.  U.S. Navy photo by Journalist 2nd Class Wes Eplen.  (RELEASED)
