Atlantic Ocean (July 12, 2004) - An amphibious assault vehicle (AAV) waits for the signal to depart the amphibious assault ship USS Saipan (LHA 2) during an amphibious landing exercise. The AAV is an armored assault amphibious full-tracked landing vehicle. The vehicle carries troops in water operations from ship to shore, through rough water and surf zone. It also carries troops to inland objectives once ashore. Saipan is at sea conducting training exercises for a scheduled deployment. U.S. Navy photo by Photographer's Mate Airman Apprentice Erik K.
