Atlantic Ocean (July 12, 2004) -- An Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAV)
speeds through the water after exiting the well deck of USS Saipan (LHA
2) during amphibious landing drills. The AAV is an armored assault
amphibious full-tracked landing vehicle. The vehicle carries troops in
water operations from ship to shore, through rough water and surf zone.
It also carries troops to inland objectives once ashore. Saipan is at
sea conducting training exercises for a scheduled deployment. U.S. Navy
