AR RAMADI, Iraq (March 25, 2005) -- Scores of Iraqi children gathered
around the Marines posting security in the streets. The children
greeted them grinning from ear to ear eager to show off to their Marine
visitors by speaking to them what English words they knew. Leathernecks
with 1st Platoon, Company B, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, searched
several houses in the western part of the city here March 25 for a man
they suspect is a member of the jihad group Jaysh Mohamed, which is
connected with producing improvised explosive devises and has been
linked to several IED attacks. They also searched for illegal weapons,
weapons caches and checked identification cards of the men in each
house they searched. The Marines were accepted well by the people they
searched and by the children who gathered around them in the streets.
The Marines gave out soccer balls, pens and paper, sunglasses and candy
to the children. Photo by Cpl. Tom Sloan
