GULF OF OMAN (Sept. 6, 2009) -- The Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS
Gridley (DDG 101) uses a phone and distance (P&D) line to connect
with the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) during a fueling
at sea (FAS) evolution. The P&D line is a sound-powered phone line
used for bridge-to-bridge communications and is also equipped with
distance flags to indicate distance being maintained between the
