Kuantan, Malaysia (July 17, 2004) -- The guided missile destroyer USS Russell (DDG 59) departs the port facility, at Kuantan, Malaysia, for the at-sea portion of the Malaysia phase of exercise Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT).  The shipÕs Captain, Capt. Buzz Little, Destroyer Squadron One (COMDESRON-1) and the CARAT Task Group are embarked aboard Russell along with the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) counterpart for the underway phase. Russell and other CARAT Task Group ships will participate in a variety of at-sea exercises with three RMN ships. CARAT is a regularly scheduled series of bilateral training exercises with several Southeast Asia nations designed to enhance the interoperability of the respective sea services.
