Norfolk, Va. (March 31, 2006) - The guided-missile submarine USS Florida (SSGN 728) arrives at Naval Station Norfolk to make a brief stop for passengers during sea trials off the coast of Virginia. Florida is scheduled to return to service in May 2006, as the second of four submarines to be converted from a ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) to the new class of guided missile submarines (SSGN). The nuclear-powered submarine will have the capability to launch up to 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles, conduct sustained special forces operations and carry other payloads, such as unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and special forces equipment.
