NORFOLK, Va. (Dec. 28, 2007) Sailors aboard the Los Angeles-class
attack submarine USS Norfolk (SSN 714) heave mooring lines as the
submarine departs from Pier 3, on board Naval Station Norfolk, for a
regularly scheduled six-month deployment. Attack submarines like
Norfolk are designed to seek and destroy enemy submarines and surface
ships, project power ashore with Tomahawk cruise missiles and Special
Operation Forces, carry out intelligence, surveillance, and
reconnaissance missions, support carrier and expeditionary strike
battle groups, and engage in mine warfare operations. U.S. Navy
