NORFOLK, Va. (May 9, 2008) The crew of the Los Angeles-class
fast-attack submarine USS Oklahoma City (SSN 723) salutes the Ensign as
they depart for a deployment. Cmdr. Ed Mayer IV, commanding officer of
Oklahoma City, will lead the crew in operations supporting national
security and contributing directly to the maritime strategy. This
deployment will be Oklahoma City's second using the Voyage Management
System, a paperless navigation system that uses digital charts, GPS
fixes, environmental sensors and electronic command and control. The
system helps the submarine locate and identify potential navigational
hazards, allowing for a smooth, safe deployment. U.S. Navy photo by
