ATLANTIC OCEAN (June 24, 2008) Lt. Matt Campell explains the operation of the periscope to a group of midshipmen embarked aboard the fast-attack submarine USS Newport News (SSN 750). As part of the Career Orientation and Training for Midshipmen (CORTRAMID), a group of 22 Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) candidates were able to spend 24 hours on deployment with Newport News and experience life in the submarine service. CORTRAMID is a four-week summer program, during which Midshipmen will spend one week immersed in each of the Navy's major warfare areas: subsurface, aviation, surface and Marine Corps. In addition to the overnight embark, midshipmen attend the Trident Training Facility on board Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in Kings Bay, Ga.
