ATLANTIC OCEAN (June 24, 2008) Lt. Matt Campell explains the operation
of the periscope to a group of midshipmen embarked aboard the
fast-attack submarine USS Newport News (SSN 750). As part of the Career
Orientation and Training for Midshipmen (CORTRAMID), a group of 22
Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) candidates were able to
spend 24 hours on deployment with Newport News and experience life in
the submarine service. CORTRAMID is a four-week summer program, during
which Midshipmen will spend one week immersed in each of the Navy's
major warfare areas: subsurface, aviation, surface and Marine Corps. In
addition to the overnight embark, midshipmen attend the Trident
Training Facility on board Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in Kings Bay,
