NORFOLK, Va. (July 24, 2008) The attack submarine USS Scranton (SSN 756) departs Naval Station Norfolk to complete electronic navigation certification using the voyage management system (VMS). VMS use a combination of digital charts, constant global positioning system fixes, environmental sensors and electronic command and controls and allows the submarine to eliminate many of the constraining aspects of navigating with paper charts.
