INDIAN OCEAN, Feb 8, 2001 -- With the sound of a freight train slamming into a mountain, a 70 pound projectile is fired from USS Cowpens (CG-63) forward gun. The gun, which is controlled by a team of Gunners Mates a deck below, can send rounds up to 13 miles down range. Eight rounds were fired from the gun during this drill held on 8 February. U. S.
