PACIFIC OCEAN (Sept. 17, 2008) -- The Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Cowpens (CG 63) conducts a vertical replenishment during a transit to Japan as part of the George Washington Carrier Battle group. The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) is transiting to Japan where the ship will replace the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) as the Navy's only forward-deployed aircraft carrier.
