Souda Bay, Crete, Greece (Feb. 10, 2004) -- The guided missile cruiser
USS Vella Gulf (CG 72) heads to sea following a brief port visit.
USS Vella Gulf is home ported in Norfolk, Va. and is currently on a
scheduled deployment as part of USS George Washington Battle
Group. Guided Missile Cruisers are multi-mission [Anti-Air
Warfare (AAW), Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), and Anti-Surface Warfare
(ASUW)] surface combatants capable of supporting carrier battle groups,
amphibious forces, or of operating independently and as flagships of
surface action groups. Due to their extensive combat capability, these
ships have been designated as Battle Force Capable (BFC) units.
