San Diego (July 11, 2005) -- The amphibious assault ship USS Belleau Wood (LHA 3) Sailors "man the rails" for the final time as they steams through San Diego Harbor completing her final voyage after 27 years of service as a U.S. Navy ship.  Belleau Wood was commissioned Sept. 23, 1978 and has participated in numerous humanitarian and wartime missions, exemplifying the strength and capabilities of the Navy-Marine Corps team. Belleau Wood will be the first Tarawa Class amphibious assault ship to be decommissioned to make way for the LHA(R) amphibious class ship, expected in 2013.
