USS Essex (LHD 2) flanked by USS Juneau (LPD 10) and the USS Germantown (LSD 42) form to make a strong presence off the coast of Australia.  USS Essex (LHD 2) is underway as the ship sails towards Austalia for Excercise Tandem Thrust 01 with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and the Air Combat Element.  Excercise Tandem Thrust 01 is a combined United States and Australian military training excersise.  The bianual excercise is being held in the vicinity of Shoalwater Bay training area, Queensland, Australia.  More than 27,000 Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines are participating.  Canadian units are taking part as opposing forces.  Tandem Thrust is a training excercise for crisis action planning and execution for contingency response operations.  Official U.S. Navy photo by: PH2 (AW) Michael B.
