Off the coast of Republic of Korea (ROK) (Mar. 27, 2004) -- The amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) steams in formation with ROKS Kojoon Bong (LST 681) during a Photo Exercise (PHOTOEX). The PHOTOEX was conducted with U.S. Navy ships assigned to the Essex Amphibious Readiness Group and Republic of Korea (ROK) Navy ships assigned to Flotilla 53 to commemorate the successful completion of the joint U.S. - ROK naval exercise Foal Eagle '04.  The Essex Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) with embarked 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) was participating in the exercise as part of the Navy's only permanently forward deployed amphibious force.
