Off the coast of the Republic of Philippines (Feb. 17, 2006) -- The
amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) underway in preparation for
Exercise Ballicatan 2006. Essex along with the dock landing ship USS
Harpers Ferry (LSD 49) was ordered back to sea Feb. 17 after arriving
at Subic Bay, Philippines, and is currently en route to the Philippine
Island of Leyte, to provide much needed humanitarian assistance for the
victims of a devastating landslide. Essex is the lead ship for
the U.S. Navy's only Forward Deployed Amphibious Ready Group (ARG)
