Mediterranean Sea (June 20, 2004) -- The amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) underway while transiting the Straits of Gibraltar and into the Mediterranean Sea. Kearsarge is surge deployed to transport elements of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) to the Central Command Area of Responsibility in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and the global war on terrorism.
