Naval Station Norfolk, Va. (Mar. 31, 2004) -- The amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5) returns to its homeport of Norfolk, Va. after a 72-day deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). Bataan off-loaded personnel and equipment assigned to the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (2nd MEF) to further stabile support in Iraq. Bataan joined the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4) in the Arabian Gulf to take part in a 25,000 member air-and-ground task force, the largest rotation of United States forces since World War II.
