ABOARD USS GERMANTOWN AT SEA -- A RAM is launched from the forward launcher of USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43) during the first open ocean RAM test firing by an amphibious ship.  The test firing was conducted Wednsday by ships of the Essex ARG.  Both USS Germantown (LSD 42) and Fort McHenry had the RAM system installed in the past year, while forward deployed to Sasebo, Japan.  It is a self-defense system, designed to protect the ship against incoming missiles or aircraft.
