New Orleans (Sept. 10, 2005) -- Two combat rubber reconnaissance craft (CRRC) rest on the deck of a Mechanized Landing Craft as it sits in the well deck of the dock landing ship USS Tortuga (LSD 46). Boat crews navigate the CRRC's through the flooded streets of New Orleans while assisting in the rescue and recovery efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Tortuga is currently moored at Naval Support Activity New Orleans in support of Hurricane Katrina humanitarian assistance operations. The Navy's involvement in the humanitarian assistance operations is being led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in conjunction with the Department of Defense.
