SOUTH CHINA SEA (April 13, 2009) -- Armed Forces of the Philippines Marines wait on a landing craft utility from Assault Craft Unit One (ACU-1) before embarking the amphibious dock landing ship USS Tortuga (LSD 46). ACU-1 combined efforts with the forward-deployed amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) to transfer the marines from the beach to Tortuga to participate in Balikatan 2009. Essex has been invited by the Republic of the Philippines to participate in Balikatan, an annual combined, joint-bilateral exercise involving U.S. Military and Armed Forces of the Philippines personnel as well as subject matter experts from Philippine Civil Defense Agencies. U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Greg Johnson (Released)
