Subic Bay, Philippines (Feb. 17, 2006) -- The dock landing ship USS Harpers Ferry (LSD 49) moored pier-side.  Later that same day, Harpers Ferry returned to sea along with the amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) en route to the Philippine Island of Leyte. Both ships were ordered into the area to provide much needed humanitarian assistance for the victims of a devastating landslide.  Both ships are part of the Forward Deployed Amphibious Ready Group (ARG), the Navy's only forward-deployed amphibious force, out of Sasebo, Japan.
