Philippine Sea (March 8, 2006) -- The amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2) steams off the coast of Iwo Jima as a Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) lands on the beach. Essex is the Navy's only forward deployed amphibious assault ship and recently finished humanitarian assistance/disaster relief efforts on the Philippine island of Leyte after a massive landslide on Feb. 17, 2006.
