South China Sea (Dec. 11, 2005) -- A catapult shooter observes the raising of the emergency-landing barricade during flight deck drills aboard the conventionally powered aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63). In emergency situations, the barricade is stretched across the carrier deck to stop aircraft unable to return safely aboard, or to available sites ashore. Kitty Hawk and embarked Carrier Air Wing Five (CVW-5) are currently conducting operations in the Western Pacific Ocean. U.S. Navy photo by Photographer's Airman Jonathan D. Chandler (RELEASED)
