SAN DIEGO (Aug. 22, 2008) -- Sailors assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) remove mattresses from the ship at Naval Air Station North Island, Calif. Thousands of mattresses, and tons of equipment and supplies were removed from the ship during its three weeks in port. The ship will depart Aug. 28 for Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash., to prepare for decommissioning early next year. While the ship was in San Diego, more than 2,000 Kitty Hawk and Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 5 Sailors moved to USS George Washington (CVN 73) which will replace Kitty Hawk as the Navy's only aircraft carrier operating from Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan.
