At sea aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) Nov. 7, 2002 -- Upon departing from San Diego, the crew of USS Carl Vinson and crew members from the newly assigned Carrier Air Wing Nine (CVW-9) team-up for a Foreign Object Damage (FOD) walk down prior to recovering the air wing's aircraft.  FOD walk downs are conducted to remove solid objects from the shipÕs flight deck that might cause damage to aircraft engines during flight operations. Carl Vinson and her newly assigned Carrier Air Wing Nine (CVW-9) are completing a recent  workup exercise in the Southern California operating area in preparation for an upcoming regularly scheduled deployment.  U.S. Navy photo by Lt.
