Pensacola, Fla. (Sept. 7, 2005) -- A U.S. Navy Landing Craft, Air Cushion (LCAC) is loaded with emergency relief supplies of water and food to assist in the humanitarian effort following the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The LCAC landed on Barrancas Beach on board Naval Air Station Pensacola and is currently operating from the amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5), which is in the Gulf of Mexico to support the hurricane relief effort. The Navy’s involvement in the Hurricane Katrina humanitarian assistance operations is led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in conjunction with the Department of Defense.
