Mersing, Malaysia (July 30, 2006) - A Sailor assigned, to Beachmaster Unit One (BMU-1), Det. Western Pacific keeps the beach clear as a Landing Craft Air Cushion from Assault Craft Unit Five (ACU-5), Det. Western Pacific Alfa comes ashore during an amphibious assault as part of the Malaysia phase of exercise Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT). More than 150 9th Royal Malay Regiment paratroopers came ashore in waves during the exercise, following two nights aboard the dock landing ship USS Tortuga (LSD 46). CARAT is an annual series of bilateral maritime training exercises between the United States and six Southeast Asia nations designed to build relationships and enhance the operational readiness of the participating forces.
