HAT YAO BEACH, Thailand – U.S. Navy Landing Craft Air Cushion 61
and 58, minutes after being launched from USS Essex (LHD 2), land on
Hat Yao Beach, Thailand to offloading armored vehicles and equipment
during the combined amphibious landing force exercise (CALFEX) May 28,
as part of Cobra Gold 2002. The CALFEX was the highlight of 14
days of training between the U.S. and Royal Thai Navies and Marine
Corps, which all started May 14. Cobra Gold is a joint/combined
exercise and is the latest in a continuing series of U.S.-Thai military
exercises designed to ensure regional peace and strengthen the ability
of the Royal Thai armed forces to respond to regional
