in Kenya, Africa. Manda Bay Naval Base is the primary site for
bilateral training, where Sailors and Marines of the 13th Marine
Expeditionary Unit (MEU) Special Operations Capable (SOC) are
participating in Exercise Edged Mallet 04. Edged Mallet is a
two-week exercise designed to strengthen military-to-military
relationships, increase interoperability, and familiarize U.S.
personnel with the environmental and operational characteristics of
Kenya while demonstrating amphibious capabilities. Additionally,
Edged Mallet features Humanitarian Assistance Operations and bilateral
combined arms training with Kenyan Armed Forces. Edged Mallet
involved more than 1,800 U.S. Sailors and Marines and is part of an
ongoing series of U.S. - Kenya military activities that refine, promote
and maintain the operational readiness of participating forces while
supporting and maintaining understandings between Kenyan and U.S.
