WHITE BEACH, Okinawa, Japan -- A Landing Craft Air Cushioned, arrives from the USS Essex to load the 31st MEUfs vehicles and equipment here Aug. 20. The MEU departed Okinawa for the Middle East in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. An LCAC is a high-speed, over-the-beach, amphibious landing craft capable of carrying 60-75 tons of payload and is used to transport weapons, equipment, cargo and personnel of a Marine air-ground task force from ship to shore.
