PACIFIC OCEAN (July 19, 2004) -- A Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC), attached to Assault Craft Unit FIVE (ACU-5) from Camp Pendleton, CA, operates off the coast of Hawaii during exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2004. An LCAC is a high-speed, over-the-beach fully amphibious landing craft capable of carrying a 60-75 ton payload transporting weapons, equipment, cargo and personnel of a Marine Air-Ground Task Force from ship to shore. RIMPAC is the largest international maritime exercise in the waters around the Hawaiian Islands. This year’s exercise includes seven participating nations; Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States. RIMPAC is intended to enhance the tactical proficiency of participating units in a wide array of combined operations at sea, while enhancing stability in the Pacific Rim region. U. S.
