PACIFIC OCEAN (July 19, 2004) -- A Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC),
attached to Assault Craft Unit FIVE (ACU-5) from Camp Pendleton, CA,
operates off the coast of Hawaii during exercise Rim of the Pacific
(RIMPAC) 2004. An LCAC is a high-speed, over-the-beach fully amphibious
landing craft capable of carrying a 60-75 ton payload transporting
weapons, equipment, cargo and personnel of a Marine Air-Ground Task
Force from ship to shore. RIMPAC is the largest international maritime
exercise in the waters around the Hawaiian Islands. This year’s
exercise includes seven participating nations; Australia, Canada,
Chile, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States.
RIMPAC is intended to enhance the tactical proficiency of participating
units in a wide array of combined operations at sea, while enhancing
