Locals from Lamu, Kenya, look on as Marines of the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) come ashore in a Landing Craft Air Cushioned from the USS Germantown January 6 to kick off Exercise Edged Mallet-04, a bilateral-training and humanitarian assistance exercise conducted annually with Kenyan Department of Defense forces.
The MEU personnel, consisting primarily of Marines and Sailors from detachments of MEU Service Support Group-13 who arrived in Lamu will participate in a humanitarian aid project with Kenyan Army engineers to refurbish buildings of the Lamu Boys’ Secondary School.  The combined effort is designed to enhance teamwork between the forces and strengthen the longstanding military-to-military relationship that exists between the United States and Kenya.
